Teacher: Hello, how can I assist you today my dear students?
Students: Can you serve us a balanced literacy approach to
guide us towards proficient, lifelong reading and writing today?
Teacher: Yes! Sure, with great pleasure. I will serve you
the right amount needed in read-aloud, shared reading, guided reading,
independent reading, shared writing, interactive writing, guided writing and
independent writing to become proficient and lifelong reader and writer.
Our session on balanced literacy approach is one of the most memorable experience
I ever had, from the start of the session to the end. The presenter did an
excellent job through the entire session. The first activity done ‘read the
room’ left me amazed because this was the first time I heard about it and
doing it as an exercise. From this experience, I can try this activity with my
students upon return to the classroom. The session opened my eyes and gave me
new insights on how to go about teaching literacy. I have learnt from the
session that I can use authentic anchor texts such as newspapers,
advertisements, magazines, fiction books the list goes on, to do read aloud and
I don’t have to only use the student’s textbook. Also, I can incorporate word
study, guided, independent shared or interactive reading and writing in my
Language Arts block and always have a routine to begin with. Learning about the
balanced literacy approach has helped me to understand when teaching reading and
writing all the work is not done by the teacher but by both teacher and
students, they have to be involved and contribute as well as the teacher. Teacher and learners
share the decision about what they are going to do. Furthermore, I have learnt that
the balanced literacy approach models the Gradual
Release of Responsibility (I do, we do,
you do), which emphasize instruction that mentors students into becoming capable
thinkers.
