The Power of Persuasive Writing

I must confess that classes on persuasive writing was
very intriguing and had left me to ponder on my school days. As I reflect on my
secondary school days this made me that my teachers mainly focused on
descriptive and narrative writing rather than on persuasive writing. In
previous courses, I have done persuasive writing so I had knowledge about it.
But now learning about persuasive writing in other ways. This has now opened up
a whole new perspective for me. The moment I realized I was missing out on
persuasive writing was when our lecturer Mrs Lazarus gave us an activity and
we had to share. I must say when Keida
and Erica presented this, it was my breaking point. The way they bought life to
persuasive writing left me speechless and made me realize I was missing out on
the power of words; I was missing out on persuasion. After this experience, the
first thing that came to my mind after the presentation was a good persuader can
be a great debater. There is a quote by
Ramsey Isler which states All good writing is persuasive writing; persuading
the reader to buy what you’re selling, to side with you, to believe the tales
you tell.’’ The way Keida and Erica expressed themselves made me ‘buy what they
were selling’, I sided with them and believed the tales they were telling.

From this, all I have learnt that persuasion is winning someone to your viewpoint or cause. There are three ways in which people are being persuaded by; appeals to logic, moral character and emotions. Persuasive writing aims at convincing the reader more through emotional appeals than through valid reasons. It is supported by evidence and relies upon persuasive devices to make its appeal. In the future when writing persuasive essays, I will use content, rhetorical devices, structures and language. My persuasive writing will be presented in the most effective manner when it is based on valid and reliable evidence, sound logical reasoning and when I speak I will ensure that I will be committed to the position I hold. All the choices are guided by the consideration of the audience. From the experience gained in Lit 102 class, I am now in a better position when it comes to persuasive writing.
I must confess Kimmasha that I have not had much experience in persuasive writing as well in my school days. My time thus far at college has opened my eyes to ways in which persuasive writing should be done with the use of persuasive techniques. I was so happy in the way Mrs. Lazurus engaged the class in presenting one point for the topics chosen. As a result I was able to not just write but present and persuade persons to support my stance which in fact is the purpose of persuasive writing. This has definitely motivated me to write my persuasive piece that I am presently working on- " Shut down Maurice Bishop International Airport !!!!"
ReplyDeleteI also agree, Keida and Erica along with their group members did a wonderful job to showcase their persuasive writing skills. With the help of the classroom lectures we will surely get at that level one day.
ReplyDeleteHey Kimmasha, I am happy to hear how impressed you were with our persuasive presentations. It was a learning experience for me as well however, I appreciated the opportunity to put what we learnt into practice during class. Real life application of what we learnt helped me to grasp the content much better.
