The Writing Process

The writing process is very important to students because it helps them to understand literacy. It will improve the students’ writing skills and help them to become better readers. The writing process is a tool that makes writing a successful experience for all students.  Students’ composition skills will develop through literature focus units and themes cycles as they participate in the writing process. When children use a process approach to writing, they are less likely to plagiarize from books because they have developed their compositions step-by-step from prewriting and drafting to revising and editing. The writing process creates opportunities for students in each and every class to work through ideas in writing, to articulate their thinking by writing and to polish and refine ideas in written form.  The writing process will help students to see writing as a medium for learning rather than writing as a polished product.  It yields construction of knowledge that support learning.

  1. I truly endorse your views on the importance of the writing process, additionally it can be used as a technique in developing good readers. Good writers are good readers and the best way to improve anyone's reading is to have them write. Writing focuses students on phonics, comprehension ,mechanics, developing their voice or perspective , and communicating this perspective to others. Writing gives voice to our inner thoughts and allows us to share them. As a form of communication, writing can transcend time and is a way to pass stories from generation to generation. In a nutshell writing makes for better readers and improves comprehension and critical thinking.

    1. Thank you, Michelle. You are so correct because reading and writing works best together as a whole unit in literacy learning. When students read, they are constructing meaning from texts created by others. Whereas when students write, they are constructing meaning in order to communicate with others. Hence, it can be stated, that none of the language arts can be totally separated from the others in any authentic learning situation. The relationship between reading and writing is so deeply entwined that people who are generally good at one will usually be good at the other therefore cementing the fact that the both disciplines working in unison is vital to literacy development.

  2. Well done Kimmasha, what stood out for me was the point where you said that when students are engaged in the writing process they are less likely to plagiarize from books. I never thought of it that way until now. I love this because students engagement in the writing process brings out their own work ; a great means of allowing students to recognize that they too are writers in their own special way. Therefore there is no need to solely focus on stories from books.
