The Stages of Writing Development

As children grow and develop, they go through
different stages of writing. It has never crossed my mind that children go
through different stages of writing. When class initially started on the stages of writing, I was able to
relate to the Emergent and Early Writers because I have taught at the
kindergarten level so I had some experience with some of the characteristics
displayed by these types of writers. I was amazed to learn and understand
what each stage was explaining. I can now proudly say that I fully understand
each stage. I learnt a lot of vital information about
children writing development from the different stages. I am now better
equipped in helping my students to go through each stage of writing
development. From the knowledge gained,
I am now able to provide advice, assist and support to my student’s parents
about the different stages of writing and share the information learnt about
these stages to help them understand, writing is a very important part of their
child’s life. I have witnessed in the past parents being very angry with their
child for not being able to form their letters properly and that was their main
focus. I am now able to let the parents know that writing is not only about
letter formation but goes far beyond, it includes drawing, scribbling, letter-like symbols, strings in letter, beginning sounds emerge, consonants represent
words, initial, middle and final sounds, transitional, and standard spelling.
According to Barry M. Kroll, children’s writing development is to understand
the relationship between oral and written language change. He believed that by
understanding all of this, we, the adults, are in a better position to
understand and promote students' writing growth. Writing is power! I must say
it was a new experience for me learning about the different stages of writing.
Every child goes through the stages of writing at different points in time.
Kimmasha, informing parents on the reasons why their children write all over their walls at home and books. May I suggest though that the information be disseminated during he Parent Teacher conferences and PTA meetings. In that way, not only the parents of the children in your class will benefit but all other parents as well.
ReplyDeleteHi Kimmasha, I am happy that you were able to grasp the understanding of the different stages of writing development, so much so that you were also able to make the connections with your students. I myself now have a better understanding of the stages of writing development and was able to use this knowledge to make connections with my son's stages of writing development.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, I agree with Laureen that the information that you will disseminate to the parents should be done through the Parent Teacher conferences and the PTA meetings. I believe when the information is disseminated through these mediums, it is likely that you will reach all the parents and also guardians.
I too have had that experience with parents just eager to get their children to write. Thankfully now I can safely say that we all are presently in a better position to get them to understand that writing takes time and the children must pass through various stages before they can be a perfect writer. I agree too Kimmasha when you wrote that writing is power, you are indeed correct. Because writing can be used as a means of therapy and self improvement, we can also write to reduce stress as well as write to empower. There are so much things that writing can be used for ,this just shows how important writing is.
